Britain and China has assured President Goodluck Jonathan that they will lend assistance to Nigeria’s fight against the Boko Haram. The assistance comes on the heels of the latest attack by the Islamic sect in Gamboru Ngala, where a reported 150 people died in a firefight with the group in that village.
A statehouse press release obtained by SaharaReporters says that President Jonathan “requested and received commitments” from both David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, and Li Leqiang, the Chinese Premier, for the deployment of ‘intelligence gathering resources.’ The discussions, according to the press release, occurred in back-to-back talks with the two leaders. Li Keqiang, who President Jonathan had a face-to-face meeting, is in Nigeria on an official visit for the World Economic Forum.
Jonathan’s talk with David Cameron was by telephone. It was in that discussion where the British Prime Minister promised the deployment of British Satellite Imaging capabilities, and other advanced tracking technologies, in support of the Nigerian military’s ongoing effort to locate, and rescue, the still missing 270 female students.
In talks with President Jonathan earlier today, Premier Li Keqiang made a promise that his country will make any useful information acquired by its satellites and intelligence services available to Nigeria’s security agencies.
Information about the Monday attack in Gamboru Ngala is slowly emerging out of the isolated village. Sources told SaharaReporters that the Boko Haram attack there was similar to other attacks in recent weeks. Like the pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, the Boko Haram insurgents again attacked at night, and wore green colored military uniforms without insignia. The official death toll from that attack stands at 150, but Ahmed Zanna, the Borno State Senator, told CNN and other media outlets, that the number is likely closer to 300, as houses and schools were burned to the ground in that village.
International military assistance is slowly pouring in even before the recent Boko Haram attacks in the village of Gamboru Ngala.
U.S. military assistance, for example, will likely “be limited to intelligence, mission planning and hostage negotiations,” a Senior Washington-based military official who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity told SaharaReporters.
